Carolyn A. (Nelson) Johnson, 92, of Duluth, died Thursday, July 2, 2020 at her apartment in Keystone Bluffs Assisted Living. She was born in Chesterton, IN on April 29, 1928, to Carl and Lillian Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She graduated from Chesterton High School and from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. She married Rev. Donald Johnson on May 2, 1959, in Chesterton, IN. After they married, they lived in Sacred Heart, MN, Duluth, MN and Benson, MN before retiring and moving back to Duluth. Before she married, she taught school in Gary, IN. After staying home to raise her children she returned to teaching as a Title Teacher in Benson, MN. She was very active in the Lutheran church her entire life. She directed and sang in choirs, belonged to multiple circles, participated on many committees and was passionate about supporting the church missions. She lived to help others. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, including cooking wonderful meals. She also enjoyed her flower gardens and belonged to multiple flower garden clubs. She was also an active member of the Lioness Club. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Don, her grandson, Luke and her parents. She is survived by children, Miriam Johnson of Duluth, Cheryl Johnson of Plymouth, MN, Mark (Theresa) Johnson of Duluth and Daryl (Susan) Johnson of Wayzata, MN; grandchildren, Daren (Rachel), Jeffrey, Andy and Cassie (Chris); great granddaughter, Millie; brother-in-laws, cousins, three nephews and two nieces. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a private family graveside service at Bethany Cemetery will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family will be donating memorials to Salem Lutheran Church, Hermantown, and the Lutheran Disaster Response. Arrangements by Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home.
