David Allen Olson, 76, passed from this life to his heavenly reward on Monday, Sept 3, 2012 with his family at his side, from complications of stroke and Chronic Kidney Disease. He was born in Duluth on January 20, 1936 to his parents, August and Mildred Olson. David was a graduate of Hermantown High School, Senior Class President and sports standout. He graduated from UMD and began his teaching career at Hermantown. In 1976, he traveled for the State of Minnesota introducing Community Education, and inaugurated the program at Hermantown. He helped develop the pre-school program, and was Transportation Director. David was a member of Salem Covenant Church, serving as Chairman, Sunday school teacher and a choir member. Golf was his second love, and he was a regular at Enger in various leagues and especially enjoyed the Monday Traveling League. He and his three sons attended the "Masters" in 2000. Dave coached high school golf and one of his proudest moments was the 1986 girls second place finish at State. He was a member of the Twin Ports Officials Association for almost 40 years. Dave was united in marriage to Jean Peterson on August 24, 1957 and celebrated 55 years this August (in the ICU). They enjoyed summer weekends at the cabin and many travels including Yellowstone and Black Hills. Their travels continued after retirement to places including Arizona, Florida and Texas. Grandchildren were a special joy for Dave and he loved attending their various events. Dave was an easy going loving husband, great father, wonderful grand and great-grandfather and friend to all he knew. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alden, George, LeRoy, Harvey and DeWayne. He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons, Dan (Terri), Keith (Michelle) and Brian (Karrin); grandchildren, Megan, Jennifer (Alex), Calvin, Haley, Jesse, Erika, Emily, Gabriel, Genevieve and Parker; great-grandchildren, Caden, Benjamin and Haylee; sisters, Marlene (Charles) Smouse, Beverly (Vern) Swanson, Nancy (Eddie) Wilson, Julee (Doug) Malm, Bonnie Olson Lane and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank the staff at St. Luke's ICU and Dr's Popham, Mayer, Gilbertson and Johnson for their special care. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept 7, 2012 in the Salem Covenant Church. 339 North 59th Ave West. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Salem Covenant Church.
