Donald R. Rothe, 93, of Duluth died Friday, July13, 2018 at the Viewcrest Health Center. Don was born in Duluth on August 17, 1924 to George and Esther (Holmberg) Rothe. Don graduated from Duluth Central High School and enlisted in the US Navy, spending his service time on submarines during World War II. He returned to Duluth following the war and married Roberta Sharpe on August 30, 1947. Don’s career with the Duluth Police Department spanned over 34 years, retiring in 1984 as a Sergeant in the traffic office. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, the Duluth Pistol Team, VFW, American Legion, and the NRA. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed traveling the world with Roberta, and spending many winters in Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, George. Don is survived by his wife of 70 years, Roberta; two daughters, Bonnie (Bill) Gary of Green Bay, WI and Sandy (John) Tarro of Naperville, IL; a son, Richard (Judy) Rothe of Duluth; eight grandchildren, Heather Robinson, Jeff (Laura) Tarro, Brian Tarro, Todd (Laura) Rothe, Tim (Shannon) Rothe, Derek (Kathy) Gary, Kevin Gary and Stephanie (Chad) Bembenek; 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial service Wednesday, July 18, 2018 in Salem Lutheran Church. 4715 Hermantown Road. Rev. Richard Hane officiating. Military Honors by the Duluth Honor Guard following the service. Memorials are preferred to Salem Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home.
