Joyce Mae (Hicks) McLeod, 84, formerly a 25 year resident of Penal Park Apartments, died Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Viewcrest Health Center. Joyce was born on May 21, 1930 in Duluth to Stanley and Esther (Holmberg) Hicks. She was a 1948 graduate of Proctor High School and worked as a telephone operator for St. Luke's Hospital retiring in 1984. Joyce was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and enjoyed crocheting, knitting playing cards, watching Nascar, the MN Vikings and Twins. Joyce loved spending time with her family, friends and especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ellen Deason and brothers, Harvey and George Hicks. She is survived by two daughters, Deborah J. McLeod of Duluth and Sandra (Jim) Newgren of Hermantown; a son, David S. (Jan) McLeod of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Velma Hicks of Hermantown; four grandchildren, Gregory (Tiffany) Newgren, Daniel Newgren, Maggie (Christopher) Shovein and Michael (Tesa) McLeod; three great-grandchildren, Bosten, Brysen and Tenzen. The family would like to thank the staff at Viewcrest Health Center for all the wonderful care they provided for the last three years. Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, June 9, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Fr Terry Figel O.M.I. officiating. Burial in Sunrise Cemetery. Memorials to the MS Society or Alzheimers Association would be appreciated.
