Larry Jo Gates, 80, of Duluth, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017 at Diamond Willow Lester Park. Larry was born in Duluth to Albert and Willie Mae (Wilson) Gates on June 3, 1937. Larry attended Duluth Central High School and served in the U. S. Army. Larry worked for Cullen-Stevedoring in his early years, worked 25 years at Diamond Tool until the closing and then worked at Potlatch in Cloquet. Larry was very passionate about fishing, hunting and camping, spending many hours with family and friends in a boat or driving back roads in search of grouse. He was also involved in Little League Baseball as a coach. In his retirement, Larry moved to Moose Lake, MN and attended Holy Angels Catholic Church. He enjoyed many years fishing Moosehead Lake and eating out at local diners. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Blanche Wedin; brothers, Bud, Carl, Stan, Gail, Roger and Don. Larry is survived by his children, William (Jill) Gates, Bonnie (Jim) Stone and Brenda (Mike) Russom all of Duluth, and Robert (Tracy) Gates of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Kristen, Megan, and Kyle Gates; Patrick and Lindsay Stone; Rachel and Lynaea Russom; Alison and Taylor Gates; his former wife, Margaret Wright of Duluth; many nieces and nephews and special friend, Jan Salo of Cromwell, MN. The family would like to thank the staff at Diamond Willow Lester Park for the wonderful care they provided. Visitation 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church. 2430 West 3rd St, Duluth MN. Rev. Fr. Dale Nau officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. In memory of Larry, take a child fishing or hunting. Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home is entrusted with final care.
