Lester Ellsworth Berntsen, 91, Duluth, died peacefully March 1, 2014 at St. Lukes Hospital. He was born in Duluth on Sept. 16, 1922 to Thomas and Martha Berntsen. He was a graduate of Proctor High School and a Navy Veteran of World War II. He married Lorraine Haug in Virginia, Minn., on April 21, 1951. Lester retired from Universal Atlas Cement Co., after 34 years of service and later worked at Superwood. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the Paperworkers and Steelworkers Unions. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers Raymond, Walter and Vernon; and sisters Eleanor (Peterson), Delaine (Holms)). Lester is survived by daughters Sharon (Scott) Shelerud, Eagan, Minn., Beth (Eric) Peterson, Bailey, Colo.; brothers Erling and Floyd; sisters Mabel Westring, Joyce Jensen and Beverly Klemke; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service March 15, in Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign Street, Duluth. Inurnment at Oneota Cemetery.
