Lester E. Leikas, 76, Duluth, died April 11, 2017 at St. Mary’s Essentia in Duluth after a brief illness. He was born in Duluth on April 14, 1940 to Enol and Helme Leikas. He had attended Duluth Central High School and later served in the National Guard.
Lester’s outgoing personality, smile, and good natured demeanor were
cherished by all who knew him. In his earlier years, Lester grew up
logging with his parents in the Brimson area and lived with the
Michael Ojard family in Knife River for a time as a youth. He drove
truck for Hugos logging and Ulland Brothers, Inc. among others. He
loved children and would tell stories of taking “big bunches of kids”
for rides in the bed of his truck, including those of his friend,
Ollie Hill. Lester was an accomplished musician. He travelled the
region playing with the Tumbleweeds country music band, bringing joy
to many. In later years, Lester kept all up on the current weather and
news, always complemented the cooks, and filled our hearts and homes
with smiles and laughter. He will be remembered and missed by staff,
resident’s and families from Bayshore Residence and Rehabilitation
Center, where he lived for over 20 years, and long time friends Ollie
Hill, Ken Hanson, Michael Ojard and their families.
VIsitation 1:30 PM until the 2 p.m. funeral service Friday, Apri 21, 2017 at Bayshore Residence and Rehabilitation Center
1601 St. Louis Avenue, Duluth, MN. Chaplain Craig S. Carlson will officiate. Williams-Lobermeier-Boettcher Funeral home is entrusted with final care.
