Marshall Bernard Thornton Jr., 90, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and sweetness—both in spirit and in caramels.
Born on April 26, 1934, in Nashwauk, Minnesota, to Marshall Sr. and Bernice Thornton, Marsh dedicated his life to serving others. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1964, ministering with the Diocese of Duluth until 1972. Though he left the priesthood, his devotion to faith and community never wavered. In 1973, he married the love of his life, Mary Kay, and together with their two daughters they built a life centered on compassion, generosity, and service. Marsh and Mary Kay celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in 2024.
For 42 years Marsh delivered meals through Meals on Wheels, believing that feeding others was one of the purest acts of love. He dedicated his life to service, volunteering with numerous organizations. He was a longtime board member at Lincoln Park Center (1975–2021) and also volunteered with the Loaves and Fishes Community and at the Hildegard House.
His 25-year career with St. Louis County Social Services further reflected his unwavering commitment to helping others. A devoted member of Holy Family Parish and Christ the King in Superior, WI, his deep faith and prayer life guided everything he did.
Among his many talents, Marsh was known for his caramel-making, an annual tradition that brought joy to countless friends and loyal customers for 35 years. He made the world a sweeter place—quite literally. Cooking was his love language, and his spaghetti and meatballs, caramel bars, lemon bars, and chocolate chip cookies were legendary.
But beyond his culinary gifts, it was Marsh’s warmth, kindness, and infectious laughter that left a lasting mark on everyone he met. He was a man who always put others first, a listening ear and trusted advisor to many in the community. His faith was his guiding light, and his greatest joy was being with family and friends. Marshall deeply cherished his daughters and grandchildren, celebrating their achievements with pride.
His life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and service and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched. His legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the many lives he touched and uplifted.
