Otto Edward Bergman, age 90, Duluth, died peacefully on January 19, 2014, at Viewcrest Health Center with his family by his side. He was born in Duluth on July 21, 1923, to Otto and Maria Bergman and was raised on a farm in Alborn. He attended Duluth Central High School, completed a two-year apprenticeship in cabinet making from Smith-Hughes, and earned a diploma in refrigeration and air conditioning from the Industrial Training Institute in Chicago. Otto was an Army Corporal during WWII, serving in the Philippines, New Guinea, Luzon, and the Bismark Archipelago. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star. Otto married Ruby Ronning in Duluth on June 10, 1961. Otto worked at US Steel, Northern Pacific Railway, and the Medical Arts Bldg. He retired from Taystee Bakery in the mid 1980s. Otto was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife Ruby; brothers Melvin, Robert, and William; and sisters Lilly and Elsie Bergman. Otto is survived by his children, Barbara Andersen (Bob Paul) Duluth; Rev. Michael (Sylvia) Bergman, Ontario, Canada; Kathy Skelton, Gordon, WI; Debbie (Michael) Tillmann, Duluth; Susan Bergman, Topeka, KS; and Laurie Bergman; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Thursday, January 23, 2014 in Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home. Burial in Bethany Cemetery in the summer.
