Richard Herman

August 20, 1926 — October 18, 2012

Richard David Herman, 86, changed his residence from Sunny Lane to Paradise on October 18, 2012. He was born August 20, 1926 in Richfield, Minn, the son of Melvin and Lillian Herman. Richard graduated from Washburn High School in 1944. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor's degree in science. He then furthered his education at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and received his Master's degree. He was an Agricultural Extension County Agent and director first in Mora, Minn then for South St. Louis County, Minn until he retired in 1983. He was a long time member of Salem Lutheran Church and participated in many activities there and was the MC at many programs at the church. He was a Sunday school teacher for many years and also served on the church council. He was an active member of NARF, AARP, the Alumni Association for the University of Minnesota, MUI, the Farmers Market, the Hermantown Historical Society to name a few. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin & Lillian Herman, his Aunt Edna Nyquist, his brother-in-law, Gerald Spandl and his son-in-law, Allen Herrick. Richard and the former JoAnne Larson were married on June 24th, 1950. He is survived by JoAnne and their five children, David (Carla) Herman, Hermantown, MN, Donna (Mark) Mueller, Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Paula Herrick-Parks, Duluth, Bradley (April) Herman, Duluth, Susan (Paul Kaiser) Herman, Sedona, AZ; sister, Catherine Spandl, Mesa, AZ, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Richard and JoAnne were very fortunate to spend their winters for the last 22 years in Mesa, Az. They were regular snow birds. The family is praising and thanking God for His mercy in taking Richard Home so quickly. The family would also like to give special thanks to the caring staff of St. Luke's Hospice and a very special thank you to Kristen Mesdahl. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2012 in Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home and will continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday in Salem Lutheran Church. 4715 Hermantown Rd.
