Richard “Dick” Montgomery, 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 13, 2021. Dick was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in County Cavan. He immigrated to the United States in 1949 when he was 17 yrs old. He worked odd jobs until being hired by Kindy Optical as a lens grinder. He left there to join the Army and spent his active duty in Korea immediately following the war. He was a member of the Army National Guard and proudly served for over 30 yrs. He worked for Jeno Paulucci for 40 yrs starting as a truck driver, and finishing as an all around assistant. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 137, participating in many activities and serving as Chaplain. For countless years he organized the placing of flags on veteran’s graves every Memorial Day. He was a proud member of the Duluth Honor Guard, and the American Legion post 71. He also taught gun safety for many years. He loved fishing and hunting and spending time at the cabin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Anne; brothers and sisters and wife, Janice. He is survived by his children, Rick (Anna), David, Paula, and John (Becky); grandchildren, Mario (Katrina), Eric (Shelly), Brenna (Paul), Tia, Derek, and Conner and two great granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews in Ireland. “May her lakes and rivers bless you. May the luck of the Irish enfold you. St. Patrick behold you. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal”. Visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2021 in Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home. Social distancing and masks will be required. A private family service will be held on Friday. Burial in Park Hill Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. Memorials to the Duluth Honor Guard or the VFW Post 137 would be appreciated.
