Roy Hammerstedt

Roy Oswald Hammerstedt, 100, of Duluth, died Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Edgewood Vista. He was born in Duluth on April 1, 1916. He was adopted by John Hugo and Mathilda (Anderson) Hammerstedt. Roy attended grade school in Midway Township, moved to Duluth and graduated from Central High School in 1933 and Duluth Junior College in 1935. He married Lucile Read in 1938 in Minneapolis. Roy was a charter member and past president of Christ Lutheran Church. He had worked with Boy Scouts in Piedmont Heights and was active in amateur radio with call sign KAONIK and a member of ARAC. Roy was a past member of the Trinity Masonic Lodge. He taught night school at DAVT school for 20 years. Roy was a partner with General Appliance Co and retired from Gartner Refrigeration Co. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Karen Engeman and his wife, Lucile. He is survived by his children, Roy H. (Susan Shephard), grandchildren Scott (Jessica) and Heather (Peter); a daughter, Emily (James Krohn), grandchildren, Karin (William) and Erik and great-grandchildren, Cassidy Hammerstedt, Silas Read O'Connell, Kasper Shephard O'Connell and Lucian Busch Schute; a son-in-law, Rodney Engeman and grandchildren, Nathan and David and 14 nieces and nephews and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Visitation 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, June 15, 2016 in Christ Lutheran Church. Rev Michael Main officiating. 2415 Ensign St. Inurnment Augustana Cemetery. Memorials to Christ Lutheran Church are preferred.
